Why Vegans Don’t Eat Dairy Products

Why Vegans Don’t Eat Dairy Products

There are many reasons why vegans choose not to eat dairy products. It’s healthier for humans not to drink milk or eat dairy. Animal cruelty is avoided by avoiding dairy. It is also better for the environment.

Human beings are the only species that drinks the milk of another mammal. Cow’s milk was meant for calves, not humans. This is why the human body sometimes has a hard time processing milk, cheese, and other dairy products. Dairy allergies and lactose intolerance are some examples of the human body rejecting cow’s milk. Symptoms that can be caused by dairy consumption range from skin rashes and allergies, to bloody stools and arthritis-like symptoms. Not everyone will have these symptoms. Some people are more tolerant of dairy products.

Another reason vegans avoid dairy is because it is better for the environment. Cows produce methane gas, which contributes to global warming. The more beef and dairy cows there are on the planet, the more this effects the atmosphere. The raising of livestock also creates a lot of waste products, feces and urine, which have to be deposited in special landfills. These waste products contaminate the air and water nearby. Cows also use a lot of land, for grazing and for the growing of feed. This contributes to the deforestation in the Amazon and other places. If there were less of a demand for dairy and beef, there would be fewer cows bred for these purposes, and the effect on the environment would be lessened.

The most obvious reason that vegans avoid dairy is animal cruelty. Typically dairy cows don’t have a lot of room to move around, and are forced to produce more milk each day than nature intended. They are given hormones to increase milk production, which enlarges their udders and often leads to infections. Dairy cows are impregnated yearly to keep their milk flowing. The calves are removed from their mothers and not typically allowed to nurse. The male calves are usually raised and slaughtered for beef or slaughtered for veal. When a dairy cow starts to produce less milk, she is slaughtered for beef, usually after three or four years, although the life expectancy of a cow is around 25 years.

There are many reasons for vegans to avoid eating dairy products. Luckily there are plenty of alternatives to dairy foods. Soy milk or rice milk can replace cow’s milk. There are also almond, cashew, and oat milks. There are soy versions of sour cream, ice cream, yogurt, and cheese available in stores. A few cheese substitutes are also soy-free. In addition to that there are cookbooks and websites with recipes for dairy-free cheeses and other dairy alternatives. It is easier now than it has ever been to give up dairy products.

Organic Dairy Products Are Worth The Cost

Organic Dairy Products Are Worth The Cost

As many of us walk up and down the grocery store aisles, we have to wonder if buying that container of organic yogurt is worth the price.  Can the organic brand be healthier than the conventional brand or is it just a marketing ploy?  Will the health benefits outweigh the extra money you will spend on organic milk or yogurt?

What is Organic Dairy?

To get the USDA Organic label on a dairy product, that animal that produced the dairy product has to have been feed organically.  That organic feed needs to have been grown on land that meets the organic growing standards put forth by the USDA.  On top of that, it has to be shown that the animals were not give treatments of antibiotics or growth hormones.

The pastures that organic cows feed upon must meet stringent standards as well.  The pasture must maintain biological diversity while replenishing soil fertility and they must remove all pesticides and fertilizers.

More Nutrients in Organic Dairy

Most organic dairy farmers rely on high forage diets for their animals.  This insures that a higher nutrient base is passed on through the dairy product.  Organic dairy tends to have higher concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, D, and E as well.

Organic dairy includes more than just milk, cheese, and yogurt.  You will find organic half-and-half, butter, and ice cream.  Organic dairy products are the fastest growing segment of the organic food industry.  Also growing in popularity is dairy products coming from organic goat’s milk.  Goat’s milk has been shown to be easier to digest than cow’s milk in some people.

Organic Dairy Means Healthier Animals

An organic dairy cow is only able to produce about half as much milk as a conventional diary cow.  The reason is that organic cows are not pushed to produce higher milk productions.  An organic animal is not given antibiotics and hormones to keep it healthy, when it stays healthy without them.  Most common growth hormones are not used for the animal’s health but induced to help promote more milk production.

There has been a multitude of studies showing that eating organic foods are a health benefit.  There are clear health benefits from consuming organic dairy products.  These organic dairy products have shown a reduction in allergic reactions that many people suffer from when ingesting conventional dairy products.

How to Avoid Getting Tricked by Low-fat Food Products

Step1
If you’re craving a snack and you don’t want to eat those fried chips then most likely your choice would be baked potato chips. Healthy right? I’m afraid not. Baked potato chips may be low in fat but the calories are still high. It doesn’t contain a substantial amount of fiber and it simply won’t fill you up. A better alternative would be popcorn. It’s 65% less calories and it contains more fiber than baked potato chips. Try to find popcorn that has been cooked with no oil or with canola oil.

Step2
Another snack that has been deemed healthy but isn’t would be the gummy fruit snacks. Yes they are fruity and fruity may be healthy, but these snacks are loaded with fructose corn syrup and that’s not healthy for the heart. Instead, try eating fresh fruits that are filled with fiber, lower in calories, and overall healthy from all angles.

Step3
We all scream for ice cream but is light ice cream any healthier than full fat? The answer is no. Although light ice cream may have fewer calories, the taste and texture is much fainter than the full fat which leads to more than one serving. We’ll just end up eating more and not exactly enjoying the flavor. A better choice would be dairy free ice cream made from coconut milk. A good brand to try out would be Turtle Mountain Purely Decadent. It’s fewer calories and it tastes good!

Step4
Soda drinks have been part of our culture for a long time now. Dieters tend to go for diet soda thinking it’s a healthier choice but unfortunately studies showed that diet soda will only lead to a flabby belly. A less tragic alternative can be flavored seltzer water. Avoid the ones with artificial flavoring. Seltzer water is good for hydrating your body and it provides the flavor and the fizz that we so need in our day.

Step5
Salads are a must have for weight watchers all over the world. Naturally, it’s not a salad without any creamy dressing. Fortunately, there are nonfat salad dressings to choose from! Unfortunately, they are loaded with sugar and high in calories. A better choice would be vinegar and oil based salad dressings that are not only delicious but can save you from the vicious cycle of losing weight and then gaining it again.

Step6
Dieters indulge in the occasional cookie when the craving gets too strong. However, studies show that they tend to indulge more when the cookie is a low fat cookie. It may be low in fat but the reality is that it contains extra sugar which makes it no different than the full fat version. Luckily there is always the oatmeal cookie to save the day. Try to find ones that have whole wheat flour, made with honey or cane juice, and oil instead of butter.
