New Zealand Farmers Feel the Heat

Posted on 08 January 2017 by admin

CHAN: Farmers in New Zealand’s North Island are feeling the heat, as continued hot weather is biting into the countries vital dairy production. Here’s more from our reporter Gina Shakespear. STORY: Dry conditions may be good for beach goers here in New Zealand but not for the countries sheep, beef and dairy sector, who have said that this is probably one of the hottest summers they have experienced since the 1970’s. Industry experts are concerned that if hot weather continues, then the real problems will begin nation wide. Sheep and beef farmers have had to send thousands of their animals off to the processing works earlier than usual due to lack of feed. But 3-4 week delays at works haven’t helped the problem. Meanwhile dairy farmers are drying off their cows, months earlier than usual, cutting milk production that is resulting in a substantial loss of income. Fonterra who is responsible for more than a third of the world’s dairy trade said season to date milk production was lower than last year and worsening drought conditions could cause dairy farmers up to 500 million by the end of the season in May. This is Gina Shakespear, NTDTV, Reporoa, New Zealand.

Sen. Darrel Aubertine — fighting for farmers?

Posted on 25 October 2016 by admin

After claiming that he’s restored funding cuts for farmers in New York’s new state budget, North Country State Sen. Darrel Aubertine is forced to admit that’s not the case. Aubertine was grilled by the top Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee, Sen. Cathy Young of Olean. Farms suffered a million cut in the bloated, 2 billion budget, which used federal stimulus funds to restore hundreds of other programs, raised taxes by a record amount and increased taxpayer-funded spending a whopping 10%. Aubertine voted against a Republican amendment to restore all the agriculture funding cuts and create an emergency aid program for struggling dairy farmers.

MARYLAND STATE DAIRY & GRAIN FARMERS

Posted on 12 October 2016 by admin

——-In an effort to preserve some special and scenic locations I have passed by for years, I wanted to document some of our old Frederick County Farms. Here we see an old farm complete with house, barn and silos. Note: This traditional design barn has a caved in roof, so it may not be standing much longer. This is just one of the historic farming properties left in the county. May this classic view of the Maryland landscape last for years to come.
