A delegation of dairy representatives from the USA’s state of Missouri has just left our shores, following a whirlwind mission to learn more about the way our farming systems work. The American visitors included Deputy Director of Agriculture for Missouri Dennis Baird, State Senator Dan Clemens, and Head of Missouri State Milk Board Gene Wiseman. Since 1990, consumption of dairy products has exceeded production in Missouri. Eleven processing and manufacturing plants for cattle have closed since 1988. With more than 100,00 farms, Missouri’s geographic location for rainfall, plus its moderate climate, land prices and population mean it’s ideal for production. Indeed, Missouri is the leading state in forage and grass production in the USA. The USA and Missouri dairy operations are consolidating rapidly into fewer, larger farms. DENNIS HARRISON lives and works on a farm that has been in his family for four generations. Until recently, he practiced the feedlot farming, where you cage the animals and feed them heavy doses of antibiotics and hormones and a way to increase productivity and control costs. After BSE hit in early 2000 Dennis and his wife Denise decided to reassess their practices and get back to basics. They put their herd out to pasture and eliminated all chemicals. Now their beef, pork, lamb, chicken and duck are 100% organically raised and are in demand from businesses and restaurants alike.
Jon Bansen believes that since he converted his farm over to being organic and sustainable, he’s becomes a much better farmer, and built a better business. In this story, there may be important lessons for both farmers and the American Public. Recipe from the episode: Egg Enchiladas Video Rating: 4 / 5
