Addressing the Challenges of Beef Producers

Posted on 17 February 2017 by admin

My name’s Geoff Zanton. I’m the ruminant research manager for Novus, and I manage the dairy and beef nutrition trials that work with Novus products and evaluate their effectiveness for dairy and beef customers. Beef producers have a number of different challenges and it depends on which market you’re looking at. If it’s the cow/calf sector, stocker cattle, the feed lot, there, there are a number of different challenges. But I think primarily if you get beyond just feed efficiency and promoting maximum efficiency, I think primarily the main challenge across all those segments is the health of the animal because we have a very large degree particularly for animals that are growing and going to be going on to slaughter, there are being transported. In some cases very, very long distances intermingled with animals to which they may be exposed to pathogens that they are naïve to. And then putting in to a very intensive management system where they’re expected to grow and produce very rapidly and very efficiently. And I think that the challenges that go along with promoting maximum efficiency really come down to having a good health program very early on, starting at the cow/calf, moving on through the stocker cattle, and then backgrounding and up through the feed lot. And it’s really a system wide approach but addressing that across the system becomes very challenging due to the segmented nature of the beef industry. Novus has a large variety of products in its portfolio

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution: 70% of America’s Beef is Treated with Ammonia

Posted on 23 January 2017 by admin

On the Season Premiere of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution filmed in Los Angeles and aired on April 12, 2011, Jamie demonstrates how 70% of America’s ground beef contains leftover cow parts (aka “pink slime”) containing e.coli and salmonella that has been treated with ammonia. Ammonia treated meat can be found in virtually all conventional grocery stores, fast food restaurants, many national restaurant chains, and school cafeterias. The saddest part is that the USDA allows this ammonia treated meat to enter the marketplace and with no labeling requirement on the packaging to inform the consumer that the meat their about to buy contains ammonia, thus hiding the truth and pulling a wool over the consumer’s eye. This is certainly a rude awakening to the majority of Americans that don’t know where the meat in their fridge, the meat in their conventional local grocery store, the meat in their fast food hamburger, and the meat in their restaurant made hamburger comes from. How do you avoid this poison? Buy beef that has come from grass fed cows, which can be found at natural and organic grocery stores and your local farmers market. No matter the size of your town or city, grass fed beef (real beef) is not out of reach. Unlike ammonia treated beef, grass fed beef is clearly labeled and contains no ammonia.

Inhumane Feed Lot Beef vs Humane Grass Fed Beef

Posted on 16 September 2016 by admin

www.americangrassfedbeef.com With recent beef recalls for the inhumane treatment of downer cows plus the concern over e coli and mad cow disease, Fox News investigated typical supermarket feedlot beef vs the health benefits of grass fed beef. Fox News spent the day with Dr. Patricia Whisnant. She is a veterinarian, grass farmer, the President of American Grassfed Association, owner of AmericanGrassFedBeef.com and processes USDA certified organic beef for local family farms. Her grass fed beef is certified Free Farmed Humane by American Humane. Dr. Whisnant states that grass fed beef is healthier for consumers, safer, eco friendly, better for the environment and better for animals. Fox News did an independent test on AmericanGrassFedBeef.com and supermarket beef. They found AmericanGrassFedBeef.com was higher in protein, lower in fat and cholesterol.
