Nature has provided the world with plenty of calcium because it is one of the most essential nutrients needed by humans.  Animal as well as plant species also need this important nutrient.  In your body, almost 99 percent of it can be found in the teeth and bones.  The other traces are distributed to other parts through the bloodstream.

You are probably aware already that calcium plays a crucial role in your growth and development.  Everyday, you will hear in the mass media about the importance of this mineral.  You are actually being encouraged to increase your intake in order to avoid symptoms of osteoporosis.

As you may well know, osteoporosis is a common disorder that affects adults.  It is characterized by highly porous and brittle bones.  If you have osteoporosis, you may display some nasty symptoms like bone and joint pains, bone deformities, susceptibility to fractures, and increased risk of frequent falling.  These symptoms manifest because your bone structure could not support your body anymore.  If your calcium intake is deficient, then you may experience these symptoms as you grow older.

Best Sources: The Foods You Eat Everyday

Green leafy plants contain high amounts of calcium.  However, this mineral can also be found in animals, fish, and most especially in dairy products.  If you will rank the foods you eat, leafy vegetables are the best providers followed by dairy products.  Animal and fish sources belong at the bottom rung of the food ranking but they can still provide your body with adequate supply of calcium.

When selecting the foods you eat, it is best to focus on broccoli, mustard greens, spinach, turnips, and collard greens.  These are just some of the greens that contain rich amounts of calcium.  Among dairy products, it is best if you can consume one serving of low fat yogurt everyday.  You may also choose between goat’s milk and cow’s milk.  Having a large serving of sardines or salmon thrice a week is also recommended.  And lastly, do not forget to include mozzarella cheese, cottage cheese, and blackstrap molasses in your diet.

What Could Happen If a Deficiency Occurs?

Calcium deficiency could lead to several health issues.  A deficiency could happen due to several factors.  However, one of the most common causes of deficiency is improper diet.  If you forget to eat your green leafy vegetable and you fail to drink your daily glass of milk, then you may suffer from a deficiency.
